Case study — ToNote
People were already searching — the answers were just written in legal jargon.
ToNote (and its e-signature product ToSign) is Nigeria's first remote notarization platform. When I joined, there was no SEO foundation, no intentional thought leadership, and no cohesive go-to-market approach. I built the multi-channel growth engine — SEO, LinkedIn thought leadership, content, newsletter, email lifecycle, and PPC — from the ground up.
01 The baseline
Search demand existed — it was just underserved
There was no SEO foundation to build on, no intentional thought leadership, and an incohesive go-to-market approach — the channels weren't telling one story. For a trust-sensitive legal product, that meant every acquisition dollar had to both explain the product and overcome skepticism.
The context that made this hard — and interesting — was that ToNote was the first of its kind in the market. Updated regulation validated the company's operations and the very existence of its product. The demand was already out there: people were actively searching for the legal processes behind the product — affidavits, name changes, declarations. But the results they found were dense legal jargon, written for lawyers, not for the person actually trying to get the thing done.
02 The strategic tradeoff
Meet the search, translate the jargon
The regulation made remote notarization possible — and the audience was already searching around it. So the first step wasn't promotion; it was translation. Taking the legal processes people were googling and rewriting them in plain language — what the law says, what it means for you, and how to actually get it done — positioned ToNote as the answer to searches that had never had a good one. Educating the target audience about this new possibility significantly influenced adoption.
The tradeoff was speed for durability. A programmatic library of how-to guides and law explainers takes months to compound — but each guide kept acquiring customers long after publication, at near-zero marginal cost, while paid spend stopped the moment budget did.
03 The execution
SEO and LinkedIn thought leadership, run together
SEO: a programmatic library of 9+ how-to guides (change of name, marriage, single status, identity theft, residence, sponsorship, sworn declaration of age, death, BVN amendment) capturing high-intent adjacent searches and routing readers into the product.
LinkedIn thought leadership: while people discovered ToNote through Google, they would also find the company's LinkedIn page and see the founder posting. For new users who had never heard of us, seeing both gave the company legitimacy and trust before they ever signed up. The B2B engine ran law explainer content — the Evidence Act 2023, the Notary Public Act 2023, and a year-in-review category narrative — positioning ToNote as the authority on digital legal processes in Nigeria.
Proof and nurture: customer case studies (DriveMe.ng cut operational costs 43% with ToSign, plus Consonance Investments and BFA&Co Legal), a Digital Transformation eBook lead magnet distributed via Mailchimp, onboarding and re-engagement email flows informed by customer research, and video production with external partners — an animated product explainer, drama shorts, and game-show format law explainers.
Paid and measurement: Google Ads run end to end (3.3x ROAS), with campaign reviews alongside leadership using GA4 and attribution data, and project management in Asana.
04 The attribution
How SEO and LinkedIn thought leadership grew MRR
The 56% month-over-month MRR growth came from running the two engines together. The demand was already searching; plain-language content captured it the moment people googled, and LinkedIn thought leadership converted that first discovery into trust — a person finding ToNote on Google could immediately see an active company page and a founder speaking publicly about the laws behind the product.
The commercial result: 56% month-over-month MRR growth, 135% brand awareness growth, and a 3.3x return on Google Ads — with the content library continuing to compound after each campaign ended.
